What is reflexology?
According to Mildred Carter, "Reflexology is a harmless method of treating many illnesses... It requires no ... special equipment, no drugs or medication." It is a massage technique in which the practitioner's fingers do "pressing, rolling" movements of soft tissue at certain specific locations of the body, called reflex points.
These points "are energy junctions that relay and reinforce energy along meridian lines of the body, passing energy toward the organs and the nervous system."1
Mildred Carter was an internationally known professional reflexologist with more than 20 years of experience. She studied with Dr. William Fitzgerald, who developed reflexology. She has written three books:
Healing Yourself with Foot Reflexology
Hand Reflexology: Key to Perfect Health
Body Reflexology. Healing at Your Fingertips
Everybody can easily
learn reflexology
Carter's 1983 book Body Reflexology; Healing at Your Fingertips, shows "the techniques of body reflex massage fully and simply illustrated by diagrams and photographs ... to keep this method ... easy to learn."
"In this book," she wrote, "I will tell you how you can use your power through reflexology to heal yourself and others , and realize almost instant results, no matter who you are." Many people have learned reflexology with her book in much less than 200 hours of training.
200 hour of training are not
needed for reflexology
I have previously pointed out that Senate Bill 1171's 200-hour required training for reflexology is not needed to protect the public from harm because reflexology does not harm people.
I now want to present evidence that the 200-hour training is not needed because children and adults have learned reflexology and have done it effectively with much less training than 200 hours.
People are certified reflexologists after
taking a one-day (7-hour) workshop
The National Center for Wellness and Health Promotion in Silver Spring, Maryland, offers a one day (7-hour), hands-on Reflexology workshop in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Raleigh, NC - in April, May, and June of 1998. People who take this workshop, for which the fee is $150.00, are certified in Level 1 Reflexology. The instructor is Elizabeth Austin, a Reike Master and Certified Reflexologist.
Each workshop, which is limited to 18 people, covers the following areas:
1. The History of Reflexology.
2. Reflexology Working Techniques: warm ups, thumb walking, finger walking, cool downs, and visualization.
3. Identification of Reflexes on the Feet.
4. How to Give a Complete Reflexology Session: set up, self-preparation, client preparation, concluding the session, and follow-up.
WHY DOES SENATE BILL II71 REQUIRE 2,800% MORE HOURS OF TRAINING FOR REFLEXOLOGY THAN THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR WELLNESS PROMOTION AND HEALTH WHICH REQUIRES ONLY SEVEN HOURS OF TRAINING FOR CERTIFICATION?
Children learn reflexology
in an hour or less
Many people have used Mildred Carter's older books to teach reflexology to Boy Scouts, Campfire Girls, 4H Club members, and other children.
These children easily learned how to "work on the feet of their parents and each other, finding the tender reflexes and relating which gland in the body corresponds to each reflex."
We assume the children learned what they needed to know in an hour or less. Knowing the attention span of children, it is inconceivable that they would survive a 200-hour training.
WHY DOES SENATE BILL 1171 REQUIRE 200 HOURS OF TRAINING FOR ADULTS TO LEARN REFLEXOLOGY, WHEN CHILDREN LEARN REFLEXOLOGY IN AN HOUR OR LESS?
Parents learn reflexology
from books
Kevin and Barbara Kunz have recently written the following two books for parents who want to treat children when they are ill and have injuries. This is more convincing evidence that a 200-hour training for reflexology is not needed.
1. The Parents' Guide to Reflexology. Helping Your Child Overcome Illness and Injury Through Reflexology.
2. Reflexology for Children. For Parents and Reflexologists Who Want to Treat Children.
WHY DOES SENATE BILL 1171 REQUIRE 200 HOURS OF TRAINING FOR REFLEX- OLOGY, WHEN PARENTS LEARN RE- FLEXOLOGY FROM BOOKS?
A minister taught reflexology
in an hour ot less
Mildred Carter published the following letter from a minister:
Dear Mrs. Carter:
I want to tell you what I have done with reflexology. After my sermon one Sunday, I told my congregation that I was going to show those who were interested how to regain their health and keep it by using natural methods. I had everyone massage certain reflexes in their hands and then I had them take off their shoes and showed them certain reflexes in their feet. They loved it. I wish you could see the difference in my people now. Many of them are much healthier and in brighter spirits. Every day someone comes to tell me of the wonderful results they are having since I showed them the miracle of massaging the reflexes.
Reflexology is truly a miracle from God that we have had with us all the time.
We pray for you every day, and we thank God and we thank you for the miracle of reflexology.
Rev. D. W.
We assume, from the minister's account, that they learned reflexology in an hour or less, as did the above-mentioned children.
WHY DOES SENATE BILL 1171 REQUIRE 200 HOURS OF TRAINING FOR ADULTS TO LEARN REFLEXOLOGY, WHEN PEOPLE LEARN REFLEXOLOGY IN CHURCH IN AN HOUR OR LESS?
About Mildred Carter
She records her early interest as follows. "From the time when I was a small child,, I had a great desire to heal. If someone was in pain or ill, I felt I should be able to pass my hand over him or her and make all the pain and illness vanish. I couldn't understand why this ouldn't work.
"As a grown-up, I have almost been able to accomplish this desire. I have discovered that there is a force within us that can heal: we can reach out with our hands and send a healing radiation surging into the energy field of another person. Most of us, however, have not developed this power to its full capacity."
Carter believes, "Reflexology is truly the healing miracle of the new age we are entering. Hopefully, reflexology will be taught someday in all the schools all over the world when love and compassion outweigh the greed of nations. Then health will be returned to the land." |
